Read MoreOne day my wife and I were taking our sons who were young at the time down to Monterey to visit the aquarium. After passing through Gilroy and the outlet malls, I noticed this field in bloom about 1/2 from Highway 101. It really stood out and I made a mental note to return to photograph it. I got my opportunity a week later. I had seen other people's photos of orchards like this but their photos, the fruit trees have a very dark, furrowed bark where as those in this photo have a smooth almost silvery bark. This, plus the bright overcast morning, brings a dramatic contrast to the composition, with the dormant branches and trunks of the trees creating a monochromatic scene offset to the brilliant yellow and green color of the blooming mustard. Winter and spring coexisting in the same photo.
